I hate to not answer your question but you really have to find something that works for YOU. Try out a couple at a local gym or visit a fitness equipment store.

What kind of a workout does an elliptical machine really provide?
If I were to commit myself to an hour to two hours a night on an elliptical, would I achieve sufficient results? Does an elliptical machine actually burn calories and fat? My goal is to lose up to 20 pounds by May 2007. Also, using an elliptical is not the only element in my weight lost regimen. So does an elliptical do much to help burn calories and fat, and how long would I have to work out in one day to burn an ample amount of calories?
Any information would be greatly appreciated.
An elliptical does do quite a lot to burn off calories. It's an efficient way to work out your arms and legs at the same time, and it really raises your heart rate. Some things to keep in mind while working out on any machine:
* your heart rate is what determines how much fat you burn, not the intensity of the workout.
* varying your exercise routine is a good thing
* any cardio workout is good for burning fat, but weight training is important too to build up muscle instead of fat
* remember that muscle weighs more than fat - you may be building up muscle, but not losing weight. The reality would be that you're in much better shape, even though your BMI or weight hasn't gone down significantly.

Does the Elliptical machine really work at burning calories?
I feel as though I get a better work out from running but after a good 30 min workout on the elliptical machine, it shows that I've burned close to 400lbs. Much more than what I would burn on a treadmill. Anyone successfully lose weight while using the elliptical? Help, keep me motivated.
Yes, the elliptical trainer does burn calories (any activity that elevates your heart rate burns calories).
I do agree with you though that running / jogging will provide a better workout.
When I was injured I used the ellipitcal to keep my general fitness up. I found some problems with it:
1) I couldn't bring my heart rate up as high as when I was running. Normally, I'd hit 156 - 170 BPM while running. With the elliptical, I'd be lucky to hit 145. Turning up the tension resulted in a higher BPM, but seemed more of a muscle workout than a cardio workout.
2) If you look at this site: http://www.healthstatus.com/calculate/cbc and punch in your weight and time, you'll notice that the elliptical trainer (in terms of calories burned) is almost always less than jogging / running. Naturally, it depends how vigorous you are going, but running tends to be the king of calorie burners.
I'd definitely use both machines if you like them. The elliptical is nice in the fact there is no pounding of your joints and there's less chance of injury. But for best cardio building, running really can't be beat.
Good luck.

What brand would you recommend for an elliptical machine?
I'm looking into buying an elliptical machine, and I was wondering what type of elliptical machine you would recommend. If you could tell me the pros and cons of it, or just why you like it that'd be great. Thanks in advance!
Consumer Reports recommends the Schwinn 418 and lists it as a CR Best Buy at $1000. Pro Form 700S is also considered to be great for the money and will cost you about $500.
Things to look for:
stride length (some are small which won't work for a normal height person)
adjustable incline
get one with arm motion (handles that move so they are being exercised also)
noise level (you probably won't like something really noisy)
adjustable resistance so you continue to get a workout when the current level becomes too easy
safety features
a good warranty
Before buying, also visit several retailers and try the equipment for at least 10 minutes. It will tell you if you prefer one brand over another.
I work out at a local church life center and they have the Schwinn 418. It is a wonderful machine! I have to put a little effort into getting started (I am on the small side) but once I have it going, the momentum is easy for me to maintain. It is also very quiet. I can't say that there is anything I don't like about it.
